Position Summary:

A Support Group Facilitator is a MN state licensed mental health professional responsible for regular and committed facilitation of weekly support and/or monthly networking groups for individuals impacted by cancer at Gilda’s Club Minnesota. Group Facilitators help members connect with one another as they discover ways to reduce isolation, regain a sense of control, and find hope. Group Facilitators are trained in the GCMN philosophy and support group approach. Facilitators cultivate group facilitation skills through participation in regular peer consultation meetings. Facilitators may also conduct 1:1 intake interviews/assessments and provide information, referrals, and other support offerings as agreed upon.  Group Facilitators become ambassadors for Gilda’s Club’s mission, core values, and philosophy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

I. Support Group Facilitation

  • Facilitate group members in sharing their cancer-related experiences and gaining knowledge and information in regularly scheduled support group meetings.
  • Serve as an expert in group facilitation and the psychosocial aspects of cancer across the continuum (diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment, long-term survivorship, end of life, caregiving, and grief/loss), but not as an expert in cancer or cancer treatment.
  • Conduct pre-group interviews, distress screenings, and customized membership plans if/when agreed upon with the Program Director.
  • Provide backup coverage for other support groups as needed and if the schedule allows it.
  • Work to build community among all members, staff, and others.
  • Groups are offered virtually and in person. This role may need to exercise flexibility for facilitation virtually and at the physical clubhouse location.

II. Group Management & Administration

  • Provide telephone, mail, and/or email follow-up with group members as needed.
  • Maintain paperwork specific to group management (rosters/attendance, group notes, information & referral tracking, pre-group intake forms, etc.).
  • Submit all required attendance sheets and communicate with the program team to manage support group size and the successful transition of individuals into and out of the group.
  • Submit invoices in a timely and accurate manner.

III. Peer Consultation and Professional Development

  • Complete three hours of training at Gilda’s Club Minnesota under the direction of the Program Director. Training will include group observation, verbal and independent review of organization resources specific to mission, philosophy, and group facilitation.
  • Participate in regular virtual peer consultation meetings (1st & 3rd Thursday of each month from 5-6 p.m.).
  • Voluntarily participate in ongoing continuing education opportunities related to psychosocial oncology.
  • Serve as a voluntary “ambassador” to spread awareness about Gilda’s Club across the community at large.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, Expressive Arts Therapies, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) or Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) or Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC/LPCC) or Licensed Psychologist (LP) or equivalent in the State of Minnesota required.
  • Strong clinical skills, including individual assessment and support group experience.
  • Comfort with issues surrounding chronic and life-threatening illness and end of life.
  • A minimum of three years of postgraduate clinical experience is preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to implement Gilda’s Club psychosocial support methods, participate in ongoing peer consultation, and contribute to the overall experience of a support community.
  • Provide annual documentation of current licensure and malpractice/liability insurance.
  • Ability to administer GCMN policies and procedures while maintaining a warm, professional, personal demeanor.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to commit to a regular schedule and willingness to find substitute facilitators as necessary.
  • Commitment to working as a team member.
  • Comfortable with telehealth platforms and using technology.
  • Supervision can be provided for new graduates and/or those currently in need of supervision hours.

Must be able to successfully complete a consumer credit /criminal background check as well as any other suggested testing relevant to this position.
