Volunteer Spotlight – Jen Scholler

Ryan Sweeney October 2, 2019

Jen joined the Gilda’s Club Twin Cities volunteer team in mid-2018, and her impact was noticed the instant she joined. From shlepping boxes to organizing our back cabinets to bridging connections for our development team, she is an invaluable addition to our community. We sat down and talked with Jen earlier this year, to give her a chance to share her experience.

How did you first get involved w/ GCTC? In 2013 I attended a friend’s Bar Mitzvah who had family who came to Gilda’s Club, and made a donation at that time. In 2018 I was invited to attend the Imagine a Place breakfast by Kerry Forbes and then shortly after attended a volunteer orientation.

Why do you volunteer w/ GCTC? It’s good to get out of my everyday world and use my skills for the good. The Clubhouse is always so full of nice people, and is very calm and clean.

What would you tell new volunteers about GCTC? Volunteering at Gilda’s Club is a very fulfilling activity. It fills you up (a real-life Sawyer effect), it’s easy, relaxed, and the clubhouse is a fun place to volunteer – the staff are flexible. And there is always candy too! (;

What jobs do you usually do here? Which is your favorite? I do whatever is needed. My favorite project was organizing the cabinets in the kitchen and office supplies.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself! I’ve had a lot of different professional experiences. I worked at Disney and was a ski instructor in Vail. I’m also a parade Junkie – I was in the Macy’s Day parade in NYC four times as a balloon handler. This year marks my 16th year walking in the Komen 3-Day Walk.

Shop for Gilda’s! In October at Zipps Liquors

Zipps Liquors has been the family business for the past 58 years. Jen’s father owned Zipps for many years, and after their mom died of breast cancer the business was passed on to Jen and her brother.

It’s always been important to our family and our business to give back.

This October, they chose to participate in the “Shop for Gilda’s!” campaign, raising funds for the great cancer support programs at Gilda’s Club Twin Cities. Shop Zipp’s all month long, mention Gilda’s Club, and drop your receipt in the box for a % of total sales to benefit Gilda’s Club

Zipps Liquors is located at 2618 E Franklin Ave in Minneapolis. Check out all of our other “Shop for Gilda’s” locations here.
