This place is lit…as in both exciting and full of literary resources & opportunities!
Writing is a valuable and insightful form of expression. And there is no doubt that finding timely and pertinent information and resources during challenging times can be empowering. That said, here are a few literary happenings to share with you.
LISTEN/™Dear Cancer Teen Essay Contest
When big things, like a cancer diagnosis, happen in a teen’s life, where can they go for expression and have their voice heard? For the second year in a row, Gilda’s Club is calling all middle school and high school teens impacted by cancer – either through their own diagnosis or that of a loved one – to submit to our annual teen essay contest. LISTEN/Dear Cancer™ offers not only the opportunity for teens to share their stories, but also to have their stories read by cool judges and to compete for some great prizes! The teen perspective is often under represented and their voices can become muffled in the chaos of a healthcare crisis.
Help us spread the word about our contest. But don’t delay, share away…the submission deadline is December 31, 2019! To learn more, go to: LISTEN/™Dear Cancer Teen Essay Contest.
If you are a frequent clubhouse goer, you might have noticed some changes in progress in our resource and library area. And that is because we are in the process of a library makeover! Our books have come out of hiding, have been categorized and are being prepped for checkout. Our plentiful community resources have been organized into a new easy to use binder system. This huge undertaking was made possible through the generosity of Allianz volunteer teams and the leadership of Becky Huerta, Gilda’s Club volunteer and Allianz employee. Becky submitted and was approved by Allianz to take a month long sabbatical. She, along with members from our Library Committee, spent four weeks at the clubhouse bringing our vision into reality! By January, the library makeover will be complete. Swing by for a sneak peek!
Lost & Found: Writing Through the Cancer Experience
Starting in February, join other members in a facilitated six week creative writing support group. The group will be held in a creative, educational and supportive setting allowing you to explore your cancer experience with the power of words, ultimately creating an individual final project to be displayed at the clubhouse. No writing experience necessary. To learn more or sign up, visit our online program registration page here.
So whether you are encouraging a teen to enter our contest, swinging by to check out a book or grab a resource, or gearing up to get creatively connected through writing…we look forward to seeing you around the clubhouse!
